The providers of financial services PayAttitude have said it is their right to charge any amount they want on users of their POS services and that there’s nothing illegal about it. This was made known to ENM that has been investigating accusations of extortion levelled against the company by its customers.

As explained by an agent of the company who does not want to be identified by name, PayAttitude deducts N86 daily as service charge in addition to N25 it collects on every transaction conducted on its POS terminal.
According to him, “Different platforms have their mode of operation and each charges what it considers acceptable. Everyone does what is comfortable for their operation.”
Asked to respond to the allegation that the company does not inform new customers about what customers have called hidden charges, he said, “This is not hidden charges. We inform customers and in fact they sign forms in which they agree to the terms and conditions of the company to pay N86 per day as service charge.”
However, customers disagreed with the company, noting that they were never given any form to sign and nothing about daily service charge of N86 was mentioned to them before they paid for the POS and started operation.
According to a customer who does not want to be named, “Their (PayAttitude) agent did not give me any form to sign. He never mentioned such amount to me as daily charge or I wouldn’t have accepted to use their services.
“When the agent came to configure the POS for me, he did it all by himself. He didn’t ask me any questions. That means he was the one agreeing to everything as he configured the POS. Why should he now claim that I agreed to their terms of N86 per day? Other financial services providers did not charge such an amount on a daily basis, even banks do not charge so much for their POS services. They charge only per month at the rate of N50. PayAttitude take their own normal N25 per transaction and still take N86 out of my own money. This is extortion and if they don’t do something about it, I will have to seek other options.
The PayAttitude agent however said that the company was working on the matter in order to review its policy.
